Keep Bali Clean – A Power Point Presentation –

Bali Trash Power Point Presentation

This is a 35 MB File

A year ago I, Ilona Selke, was invited by the Mayor of Bondalem to give a presentation on the Trash Problem in Bondalem. He had invited about 120 people to attend. There were the nine heads of schools of the larger Bondalem area, and a number of teachers plus students.

I had asked a Balinese  friend to act as a translator for me, as I was barely getting my feet wet in Indonesian. However, I soon realized that the passion I had was enough to cover for all my lack in language, and I started to speak in front of all the children and teachers myself in Indonesian.

I had a slogan: Bondalem Bersi, A Clean Bondalem!

Along with the power point presentation which you are now able to download from the link above, I was able to tell a story of how trash is dangerous to our human health, dangerous to all life in  the ocean as well as detrimental in the long run to our human well-being.

The children were a great audience! In unison the were calling the obvious answers back to me that I was eliciting from them. I was so happy. Children can be taught to do things differently. They can inspire their parents to change!

I presented the power point presentation which included images of a clean Bali, as well as the shocking images  of trash everywhere, that the children were so used to.

I had included images form the book PENYU dan LUMBA LUMBA, a children’s book about a Dolphin and a Turtle that teach children the danger of trash in the ocean.

The rivers are the all purpose rivers, that are the only real trash collection system, besides burning plastic and other trash, and they empty into the oceans all around Bali.

The Turtle and the Dolphin in the book show how  the children can help to recycle plastic.

The presentation was a success. Teachers met with me afterward and Don and I donated 100 children books to nine schools. Since the book was written in English, Balinese and in Indonesian it was a great book to teach concepts of recycling  all the while  aiding in teaching language as well! The teachers were willing to include this book into their curriculum.

The next week one head teacher of a neighboring school started to follow up with Cleaning Program of their school yard and we saw plumes of smoke rise from the school yard filling the village streets.

BUT now came the problem:

After having gotten started, they wanted to continue!

Soon they wrote me emails, since I had left for Germany and was returning home to the US. They were asking me to donate money for trash cans, trash service, recycle bins and bins for organic trash. These were all simple things, that would make it possible for the teachers to continue with the program.

I had just spend 440 USD for all the books, and I wanted help from others to aid in the trash project.

On my next visit I met with the Mayor and we worked on a program that would allow for the collection of plastic: We are going to pay villagers to recycle! We will establish a collection station at the local food market where we will buy back any and all plastic. Money in return for plastic will be an incentive to bring back all the plastic.

And now many more steps need to be taken.

We do need funds to continue. If you are willing to help ShangriLa with some donation, we will put 100%  of your money to work for the Trash Project in Bondalem.

A little bit of money can go a long way in Indonesian.

$10, $25 already really make a difference.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION!!!!!!

Yours Ilona Selke
